Nebraska Rider of the Year Event Protocol & Points Calculation 2009 Print E-mail
Wednesday, 08 April 2009
The purpose of the Nebraska Cycling Association’s Rider of Year program (ROY) is to recognize and reward consistent performance from area racers. Also, the Nebraska Cycling Association strives to provide Nebraska race promoters with guidelines & parameters to maximize field sizes, improve the racer’s experience, reward top performers, and generally make race hosting a simple & rewarding experience. For 2009, NCA is excited to offer a record TWELVE Rider of the Year awards to our most consistent and loyal performers. The following protocols, while by no means perfect, are directed towards all of these goals forthe 2009 racing season. 1. Categories at each race: Categories offered should reflect the general demographics and population base of the area. To this end, a ROY race should include the following categories:

a. A- Race, including all men Cat 1,2,3 regardless of age
b. B- Race, including all women Cat 1,2,3 regardless of age
c. C- Race, including all men Cat 4 (can be combined with B Race)
d. D- Race, including all men Cat 5 and women Cat 4
e. E- Race, including all Juniors

In Nebraska, we are fortunate to have some riders who are very fast and barely 21 years old, and others who are very fast and could be that rider’s grandfather. Unfortunately, we feel that Nebraska does not have enough riders in various age divisions to justify running separate “masters” events. However, the Nebraska Cycling Association wants to recognize and reward top performers in particular age divisions, but not at the expense of meaningful field sizes. We will accomplish this through the ROY awards outlined in this document.

2. The payout structure at each race should reward the top overall finishers in the A-race, B-Race, etc. The NCA encourages promoters to also reward the top performers in each racing category as well, as separate & distinct from the overall top performers. For instance, in the A-Race, reward the top 5 overall finishers.  Then effectively “remove” their names from the results, and reward the first (through third) racers across the line in their separate categories. The depth of payout is up to the individual promoter. The Nebraska Cycling Association can provide further guidance & recommendations on this if so desired.

3. Ability Category ROY Awards: ROY Points will be calculated after each event for each of these eight categories: Cat 1-2, Cat 3, Cat 4, Cat 5, Junior men; Cat 1 2 3 women, Cat 4 women, Junior women. ROY points are calculated based on finish compared to the racers peers within the same race, calculated according to the points table below:

Place Cat 1/2 Cat 3 Cat 4 Cat 5

20th 4 2 1   1
There is no ROY for Category 5 men or Category 4 women BUT points will be calculated in the case of a mid-season upgrade. In the case of upgrades, all accumulated points transfer with the rider and count toward the upgraded category ROY.

4. Age Division ROY Awards: ROY points will also be calculated to award six riders within “more experienced” age divisions. Observing racers perform well over the age of 45, and even over the age of 55, is an inspiring accomplishment and these riders deserve to be recognized. From the A-Race field (men Cat 1-2-3), and separately from the C-Race field (men Cat 4): ROY points will be calculated and compared for every rider racing age 45 to 54, and racing age 55+. The top Category 1/2, Category 3, and Category 4 point earning racers age 45 to 54, as well as racers aged 55+ in those categories will receive a ROY award.

Men Cat 1-2: Age 40 – 49
Men Cat 1-2: Age 50+
Men Cat 3: Age 40 – 49
Men Cat 3: Age 50+
Men Cat 4: Age 40 – 49
Men Cat 4: Age 50+

In the event that the top points earner in one of these age groupings is also an overall ROY points earner for their ability Category (1/2,3, etc), then this racer will receive the ROY award for their ability category, and the next top point earner in the age grouping will be considered for the age group ROY award. Women’s field sizes at this time simply do not make it feasible to offer ROY awards by age category. We will be excited to revisit this in the future as field sizes grow.
