News & Notes: Nebraska Cycling Association Print E-mail
Wednesday, 31 October 2007

The road and mountain bike seasons have come to close, cyclo-cross is in full swing, which means just one thing: time to plan for 2008!

The Nebraska Cycling Association is planning for the 2008 season, including Race Officials and Promoters Clinics, updates to the 'Rider of the Year' competition, setting the race schedule and overseeing rider development programs.

The Nebraska Cycling Association is the governing body for competitive cycling in Nebraska, and is recognized by USA Cycling as the official Local Association for Nebraska. Current NCA Officers, include:

President & Permit Coordinator: John Lefler, Jr.
Vice President: John Peterson
Treasurer: open, currently managed by John Peterson.
Secretary: Marco Vasquez
Upgrade Coordinator: Kevin Burke
Officials Coordinator: Sean Weide
Northeast Region Representative: Jon Downey

The Nebraska Cycling Association is seeking new board members for the 2008 season to help us better serve the competitive cycling community in Nebraska. The NCA advocates all areas of cycling, racing, touring, commuting, etc. but the primary mission of the NCA falls under the "competitive" heading. This should be considered if and when one volunteers for any of these officer positions.

The NCA seeks the following board members:
Women's Cycling Coordinator (1-2 persons): Primary responsibility is assisting the NCA with development and implementation of programs, incentives, marketing and recruitment of competitive women cyclists. Most importantly, this individual will serve as a sounding board for others and help guide NCA policy.
Junior Cycling Coordinator (1-2 persons): Same as above, but for junior cycling. In addition, this person(s) will be asked to work with regional promoters to develop a "junior-only race series"
Tri-Cities Representative (1-2 persons): The majority of NCA Officers live, work, ride and race in the Lincoln/Omaha area. In fact, well over 80% of our licensed cyclists are in these areas. During the past two years, Jon Downey (Elkhorn Valley Cycling Club) and his teammate, Dan Spray have led the way for developing a vibrant cycling scene in the Norfolk/Wayne area. Representing the Northeast Region, Jon and Dan have provided valuable insight for race planning, policy direction, etc. with a finger on the pulse of what cyclists in the northeastern part of our state desire in their state racing scene. With that in mind, we are seeking 1-2 persons to provide the same insight, direction and input for the Tri-Cities area including: Hastings, Grand Island, Kearney and even further west.

If you are interested in filling any of these roles, please send the following to NCA President, John Lefler, Jr. by Monday, November 26:

LINCOLN VELODROME DISCUSSION

The Lincoln City Council voted to approve a resolution Monday, October 29 that would allow the City of Lincoln to proceed with planning for the development of the West Haymarket Area in downtown Lincoln. The primary purpose for the development is a hotel, convention center and arena. Secondarily, the area would feature "recreational spaces." At the City Council hearing, Lincoln cyclists gathered to show support for Lincoln attorney and avid cyclist, David Rowe who presented the City Council with support for the development and urged them to consider the idea of building a multi-use velodrome in the West Haymarket Area.

Discussion will continue for months on who, what and when the development will take place. A "Velodrome Committee" will be formed to work with city officials, developers and others to help guide opinion and ultimately the development of an indoor velodrome in Lincoln.

NCA PROMOTERS MEETING

The NCA Promoters meeting is scheduled for Monday, November 5 at 8:30pm. This 60-minute gathering will be a conference call for race promoters planning to hold a road, off-road or cyclo-cross race in 2008. This meeting will help establish the race calendar for USAC sanctioned events. Race promoters that do not sanction their events through USAC are encouraged to attend, so that we may avoid any overlap or conflicts with races.

The meeting is intended solely for the purpose of establishing the race calendar.

If you have not already recieved an invitation to join this conference call and would like to do so, please contact John Lefler, Jr. This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it
